The Zoological Museum of the Institute of Zoology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the NAS RA

The Zoological Museum of the Institute of Zoology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the NAS RA is the only scientific and cultural center which almost fully representing the unique wildlife species of Animals of Armenia. The museum occupies a space of 250 s.q.m. The museum has 2 main sections – the Invertebrates section (showing more than 1207 animal exhibits) and the vertebrate animal section (showing more than 554 animal exhibits, about 326 species of vertebrate animals

The Zoological Museum was founded in around 1920 and has been moved in current building of the Institute of Zoology of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the NAS RA  since the 1970s.

The Zoological Museum was founded in the 1920s by the efforts of General of Armenian nation Shelkovnikov, museum dates back to the eighties of the 19th century. Initially it was housed in the halls of the Culture House (now the Museum of History and Art Gallery). In the 40’s the museum was located in one of the Yerevan Zoo buildings. In the 1960s, on the initiative of the Director of the Institute of Zoology, Aghasi Chilingaryan, the museum moved to a comfortable, 400-square-foot halls of a newly constructed building with auxiliary facilities and a studio. During these years large-scale activities were carried out in the artistic design of the museum. The exhibits are presented in more than forty showcases, as aesthetic, educational, cognitive and environmental values.Thus, the whole exhibition of the museum, created over 100 years ago, is a golden national treasure.
